Straight to the Point: Advocacy, December 2011

The Straight to the Point advocacy tools are intended for organizations that want to include in-country advocacy and public policy work among their programmatic strategies. Teams can use the tools to develop an advocacy initiative in three essential steps:

• Setting Advocacy Priorities helps a team take the first step in developing an advocacy initiative—selecting an issue for advocacy.
• Assessing the Political Environment for Advocacy helps a team understand the environment they are working in and the key factors they need to consider as they develop their initiative.
• Mapping an Advocacy Strategy helps a team plan a concrete strategy for achieving their goal, including determining their specific activities.

Taking into consideration implementers’ limited time and human and financial resources, the tools in Pathfinder’s Straight to the Point Series provide clear, concise guidance on a variety of issues related to program design, implementation, and evaluation. We should and do always aim for the gold standard in all our activities, but sometimes the tools needed to achieve this are difficult and time-consuming to use. The Straight to the Point tools do not replace extensive, in-depth evaluations and guidance, but rather offer an easier, more direct way of improving programs and launching new activities. The first three tools in the series are related to behavior change, education, and communication (IEC):

Pathways to Change: Moderator's Handbook, June 2011

Pathways to Change is a behavior change tool in the form of a simple game. The game serves two purposes: it helps teach small groups of the target population about key concepts in behavior change and it also helps the moderator of the game learn more about barriers and facilitators to change from the perspective of the target population. This manual explains in detail how the Pathways to Change game is used and what role the moderator plays. Before using this Moderator's Handbook, it is recommended that Pathfinders are given a training in behavior change and given the experience to play the game themselves.

FP/HIV Integration Provider Reference Tool: Family Planning Considerations Specific to HIV-Positive Clients

This tool can be used by HIV service providers as guidance when providing FP counseling and services to HIV-positive clients.

Family Planning Discussion Topics for Voluntary Counseling and Testing: A Reference Guide for FP Counseling of Individuals, Couples, and Special Groups by Trained VCT Counselors

This tool provides useful information to help VCT counselors integrate family planning messages into their counseling sessions.

Portuguese Cue Cards

Pathfinder’s Portuguese Adolescent Cue Cards were adapted by the Angola Ministry of Health and include the following methods: male condom, female condom, COC, IUD, DMPA, ECP, LAM, Vasectomy, Female Sterilization, and Natural Methods.
