VIET NAM: Projects

The Reproductive Health Projects

Photo by Jennifer Wilder, Pathfinder InternationalViet Nam’s national two-child policy was replaced in 2001 by a new National Strategy on Reproductive Health Care, which emphasizes the benefits of small family size and voluntary family planning. The policy places a high priority on maternal and neonatal health, adolescent reproductive health, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.

Working in accordance with this national strategy, Pathfinder assists the Vietnamese government in increasing access to high quality reproductive health and family planning services, with a special emphasis on underserved populations.

Launched in 1994 as a partnership between Pathfinder, Ipas, and Engender Health, the Reproductive Health Projects work with Viet Nam’s Ministry of Health and leaders in eight provinces. Their goal is to improve the quality and range of reproductive health services available through the Vietnamese public sector. Project activities include:

Training

Through small teams in each of the eight provinces, the projects train doctors, midwives, and nurses in a variety of areas of reproductive health including safe motherhood and HIV/AIDS. The training provides these service providers with clinical skills, training methodologies, and integrated supervision techniques.

Curriculum Development

The projects generously supported the Ministry of Health in the development of National Clinical Health Standards and Guidelines, released in 2001, and have since worked with the ministry in the development of an accompanying National Reproductive Health Training Curriculum.

Advocacy

The projects use advocacy to promote dialogue about sustaining quality reproductive health programming with provincial authorities. These approaches help ensure local support for the procurement of high quality medical instruments and maintenance of quality systems of supervision.

Youth Friendly Services

The projects work with the Ministry of Health and provincial partners to ensure that public sector health facilities are accessible and friendly to youth.
