MOZAMBIQUE: Projects
Mozambique Overview | Current Projects | Publications
Geração Biz
In a country where more than half of all youth are out of school and young people aged 15-24 account for half of new HIV infections, Pathfinder’s work has evolved to place a particular focus on adolescents.
Since 1999, Pathfinder’s Geração Biz Project has given young people in Mozambique access to reproductive health and HIV/AIDS services. Implemented in collaboration with the government of Mozambique, the project works with approximately one million in- and out-of school youth each year to increase awareness of sexual and reproductive health issues and to encourage the adoption of safe, responsible, and gender-sensitive sexual and reproductive behavior. Gender issues are important in a country where girls and women remain particularly vulnerable, being infected with HIV at a rate of three to one over men.
“Busy Generation”
Geração Biz, Portuguese for “busy generation,” was named by Mozambican youth to reflect their vision of a future where young people will be active, involved, and empowered.
First implemented in Maputo and in Zambézia Provinces, Geração Biz has since been extended to 62 districts in 10 of the country’s 11 provinces and involves 26 local organizations in program implementation. Coordinated jointly by Mozambique’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, the project functions on many levels:
- Youth-Friendly Health Clinics: Geração Biz increases access to youth-friendly clinical and counseling services by establishing adolescent-only clinics as well as integrating youth-friendly services into existing public sector facilities.
- School-Based Interventions: The project trains students in more than 300 schools to advise and empower their in- and- out of school peers on topics such as sexuality, teen pregnancy, abortion and STI/HIV/AIDS. Students use counseling, drama, films, group debates, and youth discussion centers.
- Community-Based Interventions: The project works to establish centers where young people can go to receive counseling, condoms, and youth-friendly health services. It also sponsors events such as national soccer, music, and theatre competitions, and encourages young people to help in preparing and airing community radio programs.
- Peer Education: The project supports a cadre of approximately 5,000 peer educators, who are trained to reach youth in their schools and communities with information on services, life skills, and contraception.
- HIV/AIDS Support: The project hosts a support group for HIV positive youth that meets each week for several hours to discuss challenges of being positive with project and clinic staff. Opportunities for youth development are also offered.
