US ADVOCACY
Pathfinder’s US advocacy is focused on improving the overall US policy environment for international family planning and reproductive health programs. With more than 50 years of experience working in more than 120 countries, Pathfinder believes that international family planning policies and programs must be based on real world reality. Pathfinder brings this "field voice" and experience directly to the Obama Administration, the US Congress, and the policy community in Washington. Working with our extensive network of grassroots supporters, we also bring the voice of activists nationwide to bear on the US policies.
Despite having broad-based support from both major political parties in the early years, international family planning and reproductive health programs have increasingly become the target for budget cuts and baseless attacks from right-wing conservatives. Issues like the Global Gag Rule and the denial of US funding to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) over the past decade have chipped away at the leadership position the US once held. Pathfinder’s advocacy program seeks to challenge these harmful policies and restore US leadership on these issues.
There has been a dramatic improvement in policy and tone since January 2009. President Obama took swift action to place women and girls at the forefront of development efforts when he came into office by immediately repealing the Global Gag Rule, reinstating funding to the UNFPA, and creating a new White House Office on Women and Girls. Despite making great strides, there are still challenges. Learn more about the new Administration's stance on reproductive health and family planning as well as read Pathfinder's Checklist for President Obama.
