Changing Lives in Burundi

Burundi—one of the world’s poorest countries—continues to suffer the effects of a decade-long civil war that ended in 2006. Each year, 1,350 women die from complications in pregnancy and childbirth. 35,000 children don’t survive to their 5th birthday.

Where you live shouldn’t decide whether you live or die. Every individual has a right to lifesaving health care. Pathfinder is making sure they can get it in Burundi. We partner with the government to bring contraception and maternal and child health services to hard-to-reach communities. So they can transform their lives.

What We Do in Burundi

  • Make sure families can access the full package of services they need—from contraception and maternal health to malaria prevention and child nutrition
  • Strengthen health centers, satellite clinics, and community health workers, so more people in more places have access to the health services they need
  • Train health providers and government health officials, because strong health systems depend not only on facilities but also the people that operate them
  • Make sure short-term, long-acting, permanent, and emergency contraception are always available to people in urgent need, including survivors of gender-based violence and women displaced by conflict
  • Engage communities to eliminate the bias and misconceptions that prevent people from exercising their sexual and reproductive rights
