Comprehensive Reproductive Health and Family Planning Training Curriculum

Pathfinder International's comprehensive training modules cover core topics including family planning methods, infection prevention, reproductive tract infections, counseling and training of trainers. The curricula have been uniquely designed for the training of physicians, nurses, and midwives by clinical trainers who do not have an extensive training background.
Training sessions include simulation skills practice, case studies, role plays, discussions, clinical practices, on-site observation, specific measurable objectives, knowledge, attitudes, skills checklists, and exercises for the development of action plans. Intrauterine Devices, Second Edition
Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) Second Edition, is designed to train physicians, nurses, and midwives in contraceptive counseling, the advantages and disadvantages of the IUD, eligibility criteria for its use, and insertion and removal of the IUD. It actively involves participants in the learning process through simulation skills practice, discussions, and clinical practice, using objective knowledge, attitude, and skills checklists. Advanced Training of Trainers
This training manual is designed to prepare trainers who already have skills as reproductive health trainers to proceed to a higher level of training implementation. This module prepares them to conduct a training needs assessment, develop detailed plans for training, develop and pilot test a training curriculum, conduct training using more advanced training techniques, conduct training follow up and evaluate training.

Module 1: Introduction/Overview
Increases the awareness of participants of the value of child spacing for the health of women and children, and the contribution of private practioners in providing FP services to the community. It also provides an overview of contraceptive methods, including, hormonal methods, IUDs, surgical methods, barrier methods and the lactational amenorrhea method.

Module 2: Infection Prevention
Prepares providers to practice appropriate infection prevention procedures in order to reduce the risk of disease transmission during the provision of reproductive health services. It includes information on protective barriers such as handwashing, gloving and skin preparation as well as the processing of instruments and gloves.

Module 3: Counseling
Prepares service providers to provide effective general, method-specific, and follow-up counseling to family planning clients and their families. It helps participants identify their own attitudes, feelings and values and their significance and impact on the counseling process. It explains the factors that influence counseling outcomes, describes the principles and elements of counseling and enables counselors to respond to the myths and rumors raised by counselors and their families. The module places special emphasis on communication skills and participants practice their communication skills in an actual clinical setting.

Module 4: Combined Oral Contraceptives and Progestin-only Pills
Prepares providers to safely provide COCs and POPS. The module includes information on the mechanism of action, effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages, indications for use and eligibility criteria for the use of oral contraceptives (OCs). Participants are trained in client screening, management of side effects and warning signs, follow-up care for OC acceptors, organization and management of OC services, and approaches to providing contraception to young adults.

Module 6: DMPA
Prepares providers to safely provide Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) in a clinic or community-based service delivery setting. The module includes information on mechanism of action, effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages, indications for use and eligibility criteria for the use of DMPA. Participants are trained in client screening and the management of side effects and complications related to the use of DMPA.

Module 8: Lactational Amenorrhea and Breast Feeding Support
Updates the participants on LAM as a new, effective, introductory method of child spacing, and improves their counseling skills in the promotion of LAM and breastfeeding among their clients. The module also orients reproductive health care providers to promote successful breastfeeding.

Module 11: MVA for Treatment of Incomplete Abortion
Prepares health workers to counsel women who come to a facility for treatment of an incomplete or septic abortion and to assess and manage the complications of incomplete and septic abortions. It includes information on preparation of MVA equipment, infection prevention procedures, processing MVA equipment for reuse, pain control, the MVA procedure, management of complications of the MVA procedure, and the introduction of comprehensive PAC services in a clinical setting.

Module 12: Reproductive Tract Infections
Prepares participants to provide quality RTI management and prevention services as an integral part of comprehensive reproductive health service delivery. The module covers history taking and risk assessment, physical exam for RTIs, what works in syndromic management, rational drug use, screening and the laboratory, and infection prevention.

Module 13: Postpartum/Postabortion Contraception
Prepares participants to provide contraceptive services immediately postpartum and immediately postabortion. The module provides information on the essential components of postpartum and postabortion contraceptive services and prepares participants in counseling and provision of appropriate methods.

Module 14: Training of Trainers
Prepares service providers to fulfill the role of health care trainers in public sector service delivery systems or non-governmental family planning organizations. It includes information on adult learning, facilitation skills, training methodologies, visual aides, conducting a training needs assessment and planning and evaluating training.

Module 16: Reproductive Health Services for Adolescents
This module explains the necessity of special training for adolescent reproductive health. Providers are sensitized to the needs of adolescents and are prepared to tailor reproductive health services so that they are youth-friendly. The module puts particular emphasis on dual protection against STI/HIV and pregnancy, safer sex, counseling, providing care to the pregnant adolescent, and dealing with issues of gender, sexual abuse, and sexual orientation.
