In 2006, 92 percent of our operating funds went directly to programs, which reach some of the world's most vulnerable people. We carefully focus our resources on activities where we believe a modest investment will have a large and lasting impact on reproductive health. Over the past 50 years, Pathfinder has worked in more than 60 countries, improving the lives and health of millions of people.

Pathfinder believes that control over one’s reproductive health is not only a basic human right but also a cornerstone of growth and stability. When women and men have greater control over their reproductive choices, they are better able to contribute to the economic wellbeing of their families and the stability of their communities. By choosing to limit their number of children, couples are confronting a root cause of poverty, civil unrest, maternal and child mortality, and global climate change.

To bring about change in traditional societies, it is essential to have the support of religious and community leaders, who are the guardians of local culture. By developing long-term relationships with entire communities, Pathfinder has had great success is changing the attitudes and beliefs that underlie dangerous health practices such as early marriage and childbearing, female genital cutting, and sexual violence. When the community understands the value of change, it is much easier for individuals to change their behavior as well.

We consistently achieve this aim by partnering with and building the capacity of local organizations. Pathfinder helps strengthen our partners’ expertise and expand their capacity to deliver services so they can thrive independently when our support has ended.

Since our incorporation in 1957, Pathfinder has maintained a fierce belief in the right of women, men, and families to control their reproductive health. We work to support, extend, and defend that right, even in the face of restrictive laws, repressive governments, and traditional beliefs. Despite the controversial nature of the work, we support safe abortion care, where legal, provide reproductive health care to adolescents and commercial sex workers, and advocate for sound reproductive health policies in the US and abroad.
